Spirit is the first thing that slaps you in Path of Exile 2 when you try to play a summoner, and it changes how you plan everything from the ground up. You can be sitting on great gems and still feel broke, because you don't pay Spirit like mana—you lock it in. That's why people end up tweaking their setups earlier than they expect, sometimes even trading around for small upgrades and stashing PoE 2 Currency for a key craft that keeps the build moving.

How Reservation Really Feels

Here's the part that trips up new necro-style players: once you reserve Spirit, it's gone until the thing reserving it is dismissed. No regen. No "wait a second and it'll come back." Summon a minion that reserves 44 when you've got 100 total, and you're living on 56 free Spirit until that minion slot is freed. The auto-resummon feature is great when your minions die, sure, but it also means you can't cheat the cap by letting them drop. Your army size is basically a spreadsheet now, and the game starts you at zero, which feels wild the first time you socket a summon gem and realise you can't even turn it on.

Campaign Spirit People Miss

The passive tree doesn't really rescue you, so the campaign matters more than players think. There are three bosses that each drop a skull item tied to permanent Spirit, and the game won't hold your hand about it. You beat The King in the Mists in Act 1, Ignagduk in Act 3, and Lythara in the Interlude, then you have to actually click the drops to consume them. They're the Gembloom, Gemrot, and Gemcrust Skulls, and yes, people forget this all the time. They'll swear they "did the fight" and still wonder why their Spirit total won't budge.

Gear Choices That Fix the Problem

If your build feels cramped, look at your weapon first. Sceptres are the cleanest Spirit solution because they come with a native +100 Spirit, and that's true even before you start caring about rolls. You can run one in your off-hand as well, which is huge when you're trying to fit an aura or a meta gem without gutting your minion count. After that, body armour and amulets do a lot of heavy lifting, especially when you hit higher tiers and can land strong prefixes. Early uniques can smooth the whole levelling path too: Enfolding Dawn gives a flat 100 Spirit, and while the Intelligence mana loss stings, it's often worth it just to keep your summons online.

Small Habits That Add Up

Most "my minions feel weak" moments are really "my Spirit is capped and I didn't notice." Check your reserved total whenever you swap gems, because one new support can quietly push you over the edge. Keep an eye out for Alpha's Howl as well; Spirit on a helmet is rare enough that it can save a whole gear slot worth of compromise. Once you're mapping, you'll end up doing the same loop: grab the campaign skull bonuses, run a Sceptre when your setup gets tight, and spend your big crafts where they actually open space—sometimes that means putting a prized Exalted Orb into a piece that lets you fit one more minion without breaking the rest of your kit.
